Description

Wanna help save the planet? This is the class for you! Buckle in and hold on tight as Miss April whisks you through the mind of a real life superhero: a nature conservationist, a planet protector, an environmental warrior! What will you do to make a difference?

This class is all about keeping our young minds connected to nature from a conservation perspective, and to use that connection to initiate global results. That means we get to talk about bugs, build our own watersheds and make our own paper (activities will vary). We will explore activities from the Florida Junior Naturalist Program on our way to becoming certified Junior Naturalists. We will focus on Project Learning Tree Environmental Education and Conservation with age appropriate activities that truly make learning about conservation fun. We will look into everything from the importance of wildflowers to the importance of watershed balance. We will touch on subjects like erosion and the interconnectivity of humans and all things wild.

The plan is to include varied activities that encourage students of all learning styles to embrace nature and live a life committed to protecting it.

The older version of the class will dig deeper into the science, get more detailed and advanced with the activities, and discuss more about career paths and the like.

It is with great excitement that I share with you our class’ intention to participate in a service-learning program based on the life and work of Dr. Jane Goodall. The program is called Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, which encourages young people to make positive change happen—for the animal community, the human community, and for the environment—and in doing so to recognize how these three subject areas are entwined and dependent upon each other to survive. With hundreds of thousands of people in more than 100 countries involved, our class is joining a global effort to improve these communities and effect change. Through this project, I hope to educate our students about the world outside of their own experiences, and show them that they can make a positive impact in our community while developing their skills to become compassionate leaders.
