Period 2 - Art History and Fundamentals
Art is about SKILLS that express CONCEPTS. This class is for the mature student that is interested in art and its history. This inclusive and holistic learning environment may appeal to some of our older students that do not identify as “ARTY.” Arty students that thrive on high quality art materials and enjoy visual expression will be stimulated and challenged. Art experience is not required and students of all levels will have options that work for them. We are gathering to explore specific concepts through directed projects, discussion, and exploration.
Together, we will explore these important intellectual concepts.
Art Fundamentals and Terminology - Shape, Line, Color, Form
Observation - How does our eye see light and color?
Expression and the Human Experience - Major developments in human history.
Realistic Mastery - The Great Painters and their techniques (perspective, chiaroscuro, organic pigments)
Folk and Outsider Art - What has been considered ART with a capital A and what has not? Why?
The Invention of the Camera - What was its impact? How did it change the way we see? We will build small camera obscuras.
Modern Art and the social conditions that inspired it - Expressionism, Surrealism, Cubism, Pop Art and more.
Art in the present - Graphic Design, Digital Process, Advocacy Art, Creative Careers and Contemporary Artists.
Art Consumption vs Creation - How to fit the visual expression of ideas into daily life and use visual literacy to support goals outside of creative fields.
What will this hour be like? Directed projects with emphasis on discussion. Quiet students that prefer to express themselves on paper will enjoy collage, drawing, painting, scrapbooking, printmaking and other processes.
No materials required. This is a great way to get in your high school art history credit.
