Elemental, My Dear Watson: A High School Investigation of the Periodic Table

Chemistry is everywhere around us. It feeds us, runs our cars, builds our electronics, keeps our bodies healthy, and makes things go BOOM!
In this course we will focus on the elements -- starting with atoms: the most basic building block of the world around us. We'll then look at how the periodic table is organized, and why it is that way; the properties and behaviors of individual elements; how they might interact with each other; why an element is placed in one group but not in another; and more!
We'll design our own "periodic table," to organize our own understanding of a group of related things. We'll get to actually handle and experiment directly with some of the elements. We'll play some chemistry-themed games and do some chemistry-themed art. And we'll learn a lot!

To successfully participate in this class, students should be able to:
- Maintain respectful behavior toward instructors and fellow students
- Read and write at a high-school level
- Contribute positively to group discussions and activities
- Complete some work independently at home

Please note, our meeting schedule does not allow enough time to meet a full high school credit of chemistry. But if you have also taken (or plan to take) a book or online chemistry course, this can add a valuable lab component to your learning journey!

** We will be conducting lab activities in this class. It is therefore very important that students are prepared to pay attention to instructions, wear safety equipment and follow safety procedures, and behave appropriately to protect themselves and everyone around them. **
