For students in Florida starting high school in 2023 or later, there is a new graduation requirement to complete a 1/2-credit in Personal Financial Literacy. Homeschooled students will also want to get this credit on their transcripts (even if it's through non-conventional means!).
If your student would like to complete this credit with other students, here's their chance! This course will operate as a "flipped" class -- students will be expected to independently complete some online material during the week, and when we sit down for our meeting, we will use that time to ask questions, discuss any difficulties with the week's material, and do some interactive group activities to practice using our new skills! This material can be a bit dry and dull if you just read about it, so join some friends and make it more FUN to learn critical concepts like "What's the difference between a co-pay and a deductible" BEFORE you find yourself debating a 5-figure bill with Humana!
So what skills can you expect to learn? REALLY IMPORTANT stuff that every person needs to successfully get through life! Like:
-- Making and using a budget
-- What a credit card is and whether you should be scared of them
-- The mystery of the credit score
-- When is debt good and when is it bad?
-- Setting goals and sticking to them
-- Including charities in your financial planning
-- Major expenses: Cars, Houses, and Educations
-- Different types of insurance
-- Investing safely and profitably
-- Beating the scammers of the world
-- The inevitable facts of life: Death and Taxes
This class is intended for high-school-age students. However, if your student feels capable of fully participating, they're welcome to join in. There's no reason they can't snag that high school credit a little early!
To participate successfully, students should be able to:
- Manage their time to complete assignments on time
- Engage respectfully in class discussions
- Maintain a positive and collaborative attitude while working with fellow students
- Operate digital learning platforms and Discord
